Strand is a 1,200m road that runs alongside the River Thames from Charing Cross to the edge of the City of London, where it becomes Fleet Street. To the north of Strand is Covent Garden. At one time, the road was lined with grand mansions and stately houses, although these have now gone. Strand is now a bustling thoroughfare lined with shops, restaurants and a few theatres.

Back in Roman times, Strand formed part of the route from Londimium to Silchester. Later it became the main road from the City of London to Westminster. The south side of the road was prime real estate for lords and bishops to build palaces. This gave them direct access to the Thames. The only one of them that still stands is Somerset House. Strand was the first road in London to have numbered addresses, Also, a printers shop at 101 Strand was the first shop to have gas lighting fitted. It was the home of Charles Dickens and the road is immortalised in the music hall song "Let's All go down the Strand".

Strand has great transport links. There are tube stations near each end and lots of bus routes running along its length. It is also within walking distance of Covent Garden and Trafalgar Square. This makes it a great place to base yourself for a holiday in London.
